February 23, 2015: calm water. Heavy haze. Land and sea breezes at the usual times under 10 knots raised no more than a light chop. GB empties our jerry cans into The Fox's main tank - looks like another motoring trip. Raised anchor at 0740.
We passed by several humpback whales grazing slowly, but shrimpers and pangas were everywhere: there were about 50 of each, and they were all dragging for shrimp along the 100' depth contour, which placed them everywhere between the shoreline and 12-15 miles offshore.
Sea state got rolly alongside Isla Isabela and the chop grew to 2'-3'. Shrimpers still chugged along all over the place. The breeze remained under 10 knots but backed from NNW to SSE overnight. The rolliness continued all the way to Mazatlan's Sabalo breakwater, but happily the breakwater entrance itself was nice and flat. Temperatures were warm and muggy. That's Mazatlan for you.
We were expected at Marina Mazatlan, and our dear friends G & J aboard m/v Shamrock were there to greet us with some dock hands they had called, as we backed into the slip next to theirs at 0845 on February 24. They gave us the best "Welcome Home!" we've ever had aboard. A nice light brunch and fresh coffee aboard Shamrock followed, with lots of stories and fun times and plans for the coming weeks. G and J were always a big part of what made Mazatlan so special to us over the years. It was very good to be back in a safe haven among friends.
Matanchen Bay to Mazatlan = 135 miles, 26 hours (not including change in time zones - heh).
