Isla San Francisco is very conveniently located whether boats are north- or southbound along the Baja side of the Sea of Cortez. We've even found it to be a handy destination when making a passage of a couple of days to or from Mazatlan. Its main anchorage, The Hook, has good holding and is reliable in all but southerly and westerly winds. The Hook remains such a popular destination because it offers all the usual cruiser activities in abundance: hiking, paddling, snorkeling, dinghy fishing, and more. As per usual when we anchor here, we partook of it all.
Our January 16, 2017, passage of 21 miles from Ensenada Grande on Isla Espiritu Santo was rolly but otherwise uneventful. We anchored in 29' under The Hook's north cliff face among 6 other boats. Two shrimpers were anchored in deeper water. During the next few days boats - including the shrimpers - came and went. It was a fairly even split between northbound and southbound vessels.
The water was green and cold, but the NE breeze stayed light. GB had overcome his bronchitis and our snorkeling was successful. Among the many fish we spotted were a pair of Moorish idols, a goldenrim surgeonfish, and a Panamic green eel snuggled into a rocky crevice. January 18 was cool, cloudy and breezy, perfect weather for some kayaking and seashelling ashore. One of these days I'll have to figure out what to do with all the shells I collect....
